Biking in Panamá

Even though other countries such as Holland, among others in Europe and Asia offer special programs and streets for bikes, and a bike is used in these places more for a transportation than for outdoor exercising, Panamá offers wonderful and interesting places for biking.
Let's begin with the "cinta costera", a beautiful boulevard by the bay in the city of Panamá, where locals and visitors enjoy an everyday relaxing place to walk, jog, skate or biking. There are many non profits that organize "walkatons" in this area and other activities that involves biking.
It is very common to see professional bikers at the " Carretera Interamericana" (Interamerican Highway), going from the city to the "interior" (the countryside). There are many hills that bikers enjoy. One of the preferred places is Campana, a beautiful place with an outstanding ocean view.
Bicycle riders also love to go to the causeway (Ft. Amador). Either they carry their own bicycle, or they rent one in site. Because the causeway is surrounded by the ocean on two sides, the path is very enjoyable. The causeway is located at the entrance of the Panamá Canal, on the Pacific side.
If you are really adventurous, you may want to continue to other provinces, and go across the country.
Many biking international events are celebrated here in Panamá during the year.

Panama has some great options. It should be noted that in cities like Panama City and Colon, biking can be a risky adventure. Motorists will not yield right of way. The streets are not bike friendly. Sidewalks are not conducive to cyclists either. If you are going to ride in Panama City stay awake and aware!

I love sports and I like biking here in Panama City. There are many places where you can go on a bike and there are plenty of places where you can rent a bike. The cost to rent a bike in Panama City is around US $5 per day. I go biking in Casco Antiguo/Casco Viejo or in Cinta Costera (pictured to the left).

Biking has gotten more and more popular in Panama City, especially on the weekends. On weekends, you will see a lot of road bikers and race bikers on the Panama Canal Zone; from the Allbrook area all the way up to Gamboa. On most Sunday mornings, they close the Cinta Costera Avenida Balboa (which are the lanes right next to the ocean), for bicycle riding and jogging so it is a safe place to do so. There is also a designated bike lane along the walking path on the Cinta Costera and now...

There is a 30-kilometer stretch on Sundays where they close the main roads in Panama City and open it only to bicycles, runners, and roller bladders. You can go all around the Cinta Costera, past Casco Viejo, and out to the old ruins of Panama City. In the metropolitan park you could run as well.

Biking in Panama is an on and off thing. When I was in high school, there were two teams in Chiriquí and more in Panama City that would go to David (the closest large city to Boquete, about 20 miles away) from Boquete and back, and they would have this race and close the streets. It was a whole event in Panama. Then I left the country, and when I came back it’s not a thing anymore, although I heard from my friends that it may come back so it’s kind of in between,...

Then I left the country, and when I came back it’s not a thing anymore, although I heard from my friends that it may come back so it’s kind of in between, because most of the people now do marathons instead of biking here in Panama.
