In Granada, Nicaragua, there are a couple of American-trained dentists, but no American-trained doctors. There are, however, several good doctors here in Granada.

There are several other doctors in Granada who are very good but who don’t speak English. If you have something very serious, I would recommend you go to Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas, which is about 45 minutes away, and where there are lots of American-trained doctors.

Most of the doctors that I’ve come across in Granada and Managua are trained in Nicaragua and many of them were also trained in Brazil and Spain; places like that. The doctors here in Nicaragua seem to be on top of the latest technology.

I can tell you from personal experience that I’ve had an orthoscopic surgery on my knee about 15 years ago and a multi-focal lens implant for my eyes about six years ago, both in Managua, and both went very well. (I’m still playing tennis.)

There are Nicaraguan doctors who studied in the US and practice their profession in Nicaragua. There are also US retired doctors who come to Nicaragua and practice again. There are a lot of doctors who studied abroad and come to Nicaragua to practice. In Nicaragua, a lot of things are very open and not heavily regulated as it would be in the States. If you are a psychologist and you want to practice in Nicaragua, you could do it without having to go through a major process to get your clinic going. You need to get a permit for operating, but you don't get regulated to practice your profession.
Public healthcare in Nicaragua is a bit shocking and is not at the optimum level. If you go to a public hospital, they would treat you, but they don't have the resources to really alleviate most of your problems. You will get a little bit better, but it is risky to put your life at the hands of the public health system here in Nicaragua.
Most people who have a steady income would get health insurance and go to private hospitals instead of the public ones.
Private hospitals and clinics in Nicaragua are pretty updated with technology. Health tourism is going on right now. For example, a lot of people from the United States would go to Nicaragua to get eye surgery for cataract removal. In the States, they pay over $8,000 for cataract surgery. In Nicaragua, they could get the surgery done for $1,500.
Doctors in Nicaragua who specialize in a specific niche market are exceptionally good. They've been able to get their clinics running and would be fully booked. They have patients from outside Nicaragua coming in because their services are cheaper than in the States. Their services are expensive by Nicaraguan standards, but still cheaper than any other place in the world.
If you are planning to come here to Nicaragua to have some specific surgery done or get treatment for something, it is worthwhile to check out. Unfortunately, most doctors do not speak English so it is a bit hard because of the language barrier. However, you would get good attention from doctors in Nicaragua.
An expat living in Nicaragua who has money and can afford to go to a private clinic for general medicine would receive pretty good care.
My kid has gone to Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas in Managua a couple of times because he had minor injuries. The clinic in Vivian Pellas is of the same standarAd for older adults, Hospital Vivian Pellas, Nicraguad as private clinics in the US. We've had some experiences with healthcare in the United States. Vivian Pellas is a big hospital and is comparable to the size of the hospital that we went to in the US. You won't even feel the difference from being in Vivian Pellas compared to any hospital in the States. Managua is about 45 kilometers (about 28 miles) away from Granada, which is an hour's drive or even less.

There are a few well trained Dentists in town of Granada, we also have some great Dr. like Dr. Blanco who is Cuban that provides excellent medical care at a fraction of US medical care. We have gone several times to Dr. Blanco and feel that the care we receive is excellent.
