How good are the medical centers, hospitals, and health clinics in Granada, Nicaragua and how close are they?

Although there are two small hospitals and several clinics in Granada, Nicaragua, I would recommend that if you are in need of emergency care or hospitalization, you go to the Metropolitano Hospital in Managua, about 45 minutes away. This is a state of the art hospital with doctors trained from all over the world. There are many world renowned doctors practicing there and the care is exceptional.

Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas in Managua is only about 35 minutes away from Granada by car so hospitals are fairly close. If you go to Pellas, you will think that you are in a North American hospital. There are atleast three more hospitals in Managua that are almost the same quality as Pellas.

But generally, everyone goes to the hospitals in Granada. They have the same system and they will take care of you. Our hospitals are pretty standard in a sense that they can give you medication and do some surgeries. The hospitals here might not be the same as the hospitals in the US, but the doctors here are up to US standards.
If you are an expat and you come to Granada, you might expect a very modern, upscale hospital. You will not find that here in Granada. We have a lot of expats here in Granada who are over 70 years old and when they have a problem, I’ve seen ambulances assist and take them to hospitals right away. We have both public and private hospitals here in Granada.
You can tell the difference between public and private hospitals here. The obvious differences would of course be the cost and the ambiance of the hospital itself. Private hospitals are cleaner and are well maintained. The doctors in private hospitals pay more attention to patients in terms of always talking to them and making sure that you are okay.
That is actually another thing about the doctors here in Nicaragua. They are not like the doctors in other countries. Here, you can actually get the phone number of your doctor and call them anytime. If you need a doctor to visit you, they do it. You just have to call them and they can give you a home visit.
For a modest amount of money, you can get good medical service from doctors here in Nicaragua. This is one of the reasons why many people of other countries come to Nicaragua for medical attention. The price they pay here for the same medical services is way cheaper than how much they would spend in their home countries.
The Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas in Managua has a special medical program for expats who are living here in Nicaragua. You just have to pay an annual fee and you can go to the hospital anytime and make sure you are fine. I think it is only about US $700 per for basic coverage. The cost for surgeries here are a lot lower than the cost in the US. The doctors are bilingual so you will not feel lost and the doctors will make you feel comfortable.
The hospitals here are decent but they are not like the ones in the US. However, that does not mean that the doctors are not good and that these hospitals don't have the standard equipment needed in taking care of patients.
If you have an emergency in Granada, and you need an ambulance and someone to take you to the hospital right away, that is not a problem here in Granada. Only if your case is too complicated, then they will stabilize you and take you to the Cocibolca hospital in Managua. There is also another hospital in Masaya City, which is 15 minutes away. You are pretty close to everything if you are in Granada.

I wouldn’t recommend going to the public health centers and hospitals because that tends to be for the poor people in Granada, so you have to wait a long time before you get attended and there is always lots of people there because it is free. If you are very sick, you won't get attended to quickly.
The private hospital here in Granada is fairly new; it just opened about 6 months ago. The name of the hospital is Hospital Cruz Azul. They have new facilities and very good doctors. It is not very expensive and their beds are very comfortable. I know this first hand because I was in the hospital for almost a week. I was rushed to the emergency room and in just about five minutes a doctor was already attending to me. The doctors there are very efficient.
The consult here in Granada costs only around US $30 and a blood test is around $7. It might be expensive for Nicaraguans, but for foreigners, it is not.
We also have private practice doctors. They are very efficient and have a lot of experience and knowledge in their specialties. They charge around $25 to $30 for a consultation.

We went to the medical center in Diria, approx 20 minutes outside of Granada. We went there around 9 pm Sunday and where received by the nurse who immediately called the attending doctor. After inspecting the wound they had my fiancee lay down and proceeded to put on medical gloves. Than the nurse got the...

After inspecting the wound they had my fiancee lay down and proceeded to put on medical gloves. Than the nurse got the medical supplies to start cleaning the sound. After 1 hour my fiancee was all stitched up and we where able to go to our local pharmacy for pain pills etc.
The total cost of this procedure was US$0 (yes, zero) cost to us since we reside in the community. We did give some money to the doctor and nurse for a lunch and drink.
The next morning we got a call from our neighborhood doctor who told us he would stop by and tend to the wound. He did this for 10 days at a cost of US$7 per day. He brought his own medical supplies and he also gave my fiancee a tetanus shot.
On Monday I called a friend to get a name of a plastic surgeon to see what we needed to do and get an appointment. The surgeon called us an asked to send us pictures via WhatsApp. We did and set up an appointment for 2 months later.
Overall, the care in this particular center was excellent and we would go back for any care we needed.
